Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Block Foundation?
The Block Foundation is a non-profit using blockchain technology and open-source architectural design to address the global housing crisis. We research, prototype and publish new models for funding, governing and inhabiting the built environment.
What does the Block Foundation actually build?
Smart contracts and reference implementations for Democratised Autonomous Buildings (DAB), tooling for cooperative governance and quadratic voting, an open library of architectural designs, and the research papers and documentation that explain how it all fits together.
Is the work open source?
Yes. All Block Foundation code, contracts, designs and publications are released under permissive open licenses on GitHub so that anyone can audit, fork and extend them.
How can I contribute?
Submit designs to the open library, contribute code or review pull requests on GitHub, take part in governance votes, fund a community initiative, or help spread the word.
Can I partner with the Block Foundation?
Yes — we collaborate with architecture firms, research institutes, NGOs, municipalities and corporates. See the partners page for the kinds of partnership we offer, then email [email protected].
How do I apply for a grant?
Email [email protected] with “Grants Programme” in the subject line. Include a one-page summary of your proposal, the team behind it, and how it advances open, decentralised housing.
Do I need to know blockchain to take part?
No. We need architects, designers, urbanists, lawyers, writers, policy researchers and community organisers as much as we need engineers. If your work touches the built environment in any way, there is a place for you.
Where can I follow your research?
Our research output, white papers and reference implementations are published on GitHub.
Do you accept donations?
Yes. As a Dutch non-profit foundation we accept donations to fund research, community initiatives and open-source development. Reach out for our donation details.
Where are you based?
The foundation is registered in the Netherlands and primarily operates out of Amsterdam, but our contributors and partners are distributed globally.
